Prepare your Volvo for Winter

Prepare your Volvo for Winter

With ski trips on the calendar—and plenty of cold-weather commuting ahead—it’s the perfect time to make sure your vehicle is ready for winter. Severe weather can be tough on your car, so a little preparation goes a long way toward keeping every drive safe, reliable, and enjoyable.

At Valentine Volvo, our trained technicians can complete a full winter inspection to ensure no important items are overlooked. Here’s what we recommend checking as temperatures start to drop:

Battery

Cold weather is hard on batteries, and a weak one won’t get you very far on a -30°C morning.

  • Ensure the motor is in good working order—cold starts require a fully charged battery.
  • Have the battery posts cleaned and the charging system and belts inspected.
  • Replace weak batteries before they fail.
  • Remember: At -30°C, your battery’s effective power can drop by 50–60%.

Lights

Visibility is everything in winter driving.

  • Confirm all exterior lights are working properly.
  • Ensure headlights are correctly aimed for maximum visibility.

Brakes

Winter roads demand quick, reliable stopping power.

  • Get a full brake inspection to ensure everything is in top condition.
  • If you notice a change in pedal feel or hear squealing or grinding, it may be time for service.

Exhaust System

Your safety depends on a properly functioning exhaust.

  • Check for leaks that could allow carbon monoxide to enter the cabin.

Heating & Cooling System

You need heat to stay warm—and to keep your windshield clear.

  • Inspect radiator hoses and drive belts for cracks or leaks.
  • Confirm the radiator cap, water pump, and thermostat are working properly.
  • Test coolant/antifreeze strength and levels.
  • Ensure the heater and defroster perform well.

Windshield Wipers & Washer Fluid

Good visibility is non-negotiable in snowy months.

  • Replace worn or streaking wiper blades.
  • Use winter-rated washer fluid (-40°C) and keep an extra jug in your vehicle.

Tires

Your tires are your first line of defence against ice and snow.

  • Maintain proper tire pressure—cold temperatures cause it to drop.
  • Ensure winter tires have at least 4mm of tread depth for optimal grip.
  • Travelling to B.C.? Mountain driving regulations require the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol on your tires during winter months.
