Volvo Unveils Groundbreaking Adaptive Safety Belt — Coming Soon to the Fully Electric Volvo EX60
Volvo has always been at the forefront of automotive safety — and now, we’re rewriting the rules again.
In a world-first innovation, Volvo Cars has introduced the multi-adaptive safety belt, a next-generation safety feature designed to better protect everyone on the road. This cutting-edge technology will debut in the upcoming fully electric Volvo EX60, expected to arrive in 2026.
What makes this belt truly revolutionary? It adapts to you — and the world around you.
Safety That Adjusts in Real Time
Unlike traditional safety belts, this new system uses real-time data from the vehicle’s advanced sensors to customize its response to the unique person wearing it and the crash conditions they might face. Everything from your height and weight to your posture and seating position is taken into account.
In the event of a collision, the system quickly analyzes crash characteristics — speed, direction, force, and more — and adjusts the belt’s tension accordingly. This helps reduce the risk of injury, whether it's minimizing head trauma in a high-impact crash or lowering pressure to prevent rib fractures in milder scenarios.
Built on Decades of Research
This innovation is part of Volvo’s broader mission to create vehicles that are safe for everyone, not just average test dummies. Backed by over 50 years of research and a database of more than 80,000 real-world crash cases, Volvo is once again raising the bar.
The new system expands the range of belt tension settings from 3 to 11, giving it far more flexibility to respond to different bodies and crash types. And just like your smartphone, it gets smarter over time — software updates are delivered over-the-air, continuously improving safety with every update.
More Than a Seatbelt — It’s a Safety Ecosystem
The multi-adaptive safety belt is designed to work seamlessly with other advanced safety systems, including airbags, occupant detection, and driver-assistance features. This integrated safety network ensures a harmonized response to emergencies, helping prevent injuries in both the initial impact and any secondary collisions.
Coming to Calgary in 2026
The Volvo EX60, a sleek new addition to Volvo’s fully electric lineup, will be the first to feature this world-first safety innovation. For Calgary drivers who value both sustainability and next-level safety, the EX60 will offer the best of both worlds.
