The windshield is an integral part of the design of Volvo vehicles. It serves key roles in increasing the structural integrity of the body and in supporting the function of Volvo’s IntelliSafe active safety system. As such, Volvo Car Canada recommends that all windshield replacements on Volvo vehicles be performed according to Volvo standards, at a certified Volvo facility, using only a Volvo genuine windshield and Volvo genuine adhesive.
Volvo Cars has designed the windshield to meet very precise requirements which are critical for both driving comfort and safety. By providing an undistorted view for the driver, and by supporting the unique design requirements on vehicles with a Graphical Heads-up Display, a Volvo genuine replacement windshield ensures comfortable vehicle operation.
As a critical structural component of the vehicle, a Volvo windshield serves a key safety function by enhancing the overall strength of the car. A precise fitment, using a Volvo windshield and adhesive is therefore a critical safety consideration.
Volvo Cars cannot verify if a non-Volvo windshield and windshield adhesives are being manufactured to the exact specifications Volvo requires and this may affect the performance of both active and passive safety systems.
The windshield is vital for the correct function of the IntelliSafe active safety system. The camera and radar sensors are located inside the upper edge of the windshield and they are sensitive to optical and geometric variations in the glass. These sensors must have an undistorted view in front of the car to work optimally, and to achieve this, Volvo Car has outlined precise requirements for the thickness of the glass, glazing material and optical quality all of which must be optimized for all viewing angles.
Using a non-Volvo windshield that doesn’t meet the precise specifications outlined by Volvo Car may compromise the function of the IntelliSafe active safety system.
